In the Mahāparinirvāṇasūtra, all things are compared to a water-pond where, during the peak of summer, people find relief from the heat, and play. A lapis-lazuli gem is somewhere in the water, and thus the whole pond shines "just like its light" (tat-prabhā iva). The exceptionally resplendent blue gem is a simile for Buddha-nature.
